Lord Mountbatten - Hero or Villain in India's eye
Lord Mountbatten - Hero or Villain in India's eye:
Partition also helped the British who ruled India
following the principle of divide and rule. Lord Mountbatten is the achiever
who completed the most difficult and impossible process in modern world
history! But, should he be called a hero for unraveling the riddles and ending
the colonial rule? Should he be called a villain for igniting the smoke that
still remains unlit?
All the
British viceroys are those who tried to tighten the grip of the English on
India! But only one Mountbatten... Came to break the hold as quickly as
possible.. Louis Francine Albert Victor Nicholas Mountbatten. Alias... Lord
Mountbatten! Lord Mountbatten was born on June 25, 1900 to Prince Louis Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Hesse. He served as the Commander0in-Chief
of the British South East Asia Command during the Second World War.
Mountbatten
arrived in India in March of 1947 with the powers he got from London saying, “Unify
if possible... or divide”. Mountbatten, who met with the Muslim League leader
Muhammad Ali Jinnah, questioned the basis for the formation of Pakistan. Jinnah
had no answer. Jinnah’s argument was that it was possible for Hindus and
Muslims to live together. The same is the basis for seeking partition. That is
why Mountbatten described Jinnah as ‘a fool’.
Convinced the Congress:
Demanding
Pakistan... Muslim League is creating chaos in the country. Punjab and Bengal
are raging with religious riots. Even if the country is united, the Congress
Leaders have come to know that it is difficult to share power with the Muslim
League. Based on this point… Mountbatten changed the mind of Congress.
Convinced Nehru and Patel. Gandhi was pleased. The Mahatma made sure that his
efforts to solve the problem were not hindered.
Appeasement of institutions:
Another
problem was faced in the form of institutions. The question has arisen that
they are not paying attention to those who have been loyal to the British
government all these years. Mountbatten used his influence with the colonies as
viceroy to lead them towards annexation. He clarified that the British
government will not give special status to any institution. Advised them not to
think of independence... to join some country... convinced many states
themselves.
Approval in five minutes:
At first
there was no clarity on how to divide the country. Along with India, Pakistan,
Bengal, Punjab, Bombay, Madras, United Provinces, North West States...
Mountbatten wrote a plan to be independent. Due to strong opposition to this...
on the suggestion of his constitutional adviser Menon... he narrowed down the
division to India-Pakistan. He reached London with the same plan and got it
approved in 5 minutes in front of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. Returned on
May 31, 1947 and met Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jinnah, Liaquat Ali and
others. It was announced on 3 June 1947 that the United India would be divided
into India and Pakistan on 15 August. Mountbatten is credited with declaring
India’s independence 10 months before the deadline of June 30, 1948, as stated
by the British Prime Minister. Later Radcliffe was called in... And the
division of borders was completed.
Lord
Mountbatten, who played an important role in the world history, was the last
Viceroy (British India) till August 15, 1947 and the first Governor General of
independent India till June 21, 1948 later he went to England and joined his
duties. On August 27, 1979, he went on a boat trip in a river in Ireland with
his grandson and family members. Mountbatten along with his grandson and family
members, were killed when a bomb planted by the Irish Republican Army (IRA)
exploded on the boat.
