What is "October 22" in Indian History
October 22.. A day that turned Indian history around! The day when the English began to occupy The India! The day that paved the way for our 200 years of slavery.
East Indian traders who set foot in Bengal with the Battle of Plassey.. On October 1764, 22, the whole of Bengal was occupied by the Battle of Buxar, which began. It was here that a strong foundation was laid for the whole of India to fall into British hands.
The Battle of Buxar is one of the most crucial in the history of modern India! The East India Company defeated three Mughal kinds in this battle, which took place near Buxar in then Bengal(now in Bihar). The combined forces of the Nawab of Bengal Mir Qasim, the Nawab of Awadh, Shuja-ud-Daulah, and the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II.. The East India Army led by Hector Munro was defeated.
By the time the East India Company entered India, Bengal was the richest region. Bihar and Orissa were also merged with Bengal at that time. East India entered Bengal with the victory in the Battle of Plassey in 1757. However, as they were yet to get a full hold, they supported Mir Qasim as the Nawab of Bengal.
Despite initially having the support of the English, Qasim slowly began to make his own decisions. The British did not like it. This led to differences.
The nawab of Awadh and the Mughal emperors were in the same situation. As a result, the three together wanted to rein in the English. War was declared. The battle was fought at Katkauli, about 6km of Buxar. The strength of the Mughal army was 40000 the number of East India armies was 10000(of which the English were only 857). However, within a few hours, the East India Company defeated the mughal forces which lacked coordination. Mir Qasim fled to north-west India and died. Shah Alam II surrendered to Britain. Shuja-ud-Daula fought intermittently and then ran away.
With the defeat in the Battle of Buxar, the Treaty of Allahabad came into force. According to it.. The Diwani rights(right over taxes) of the whole of Bengal were given to the East India Company. Even if the Nawabs collect.. Everything belonged to the whites. With the huge wealth that came with it.. The East India Company has started expanding to other parts of India.
